MATTHEW
GRABELSKY
Animal Human Hybrids
Matthew Grabelsky is an artist from New York who has established himself as a master of blending the everyday with the subconscious in his work. After completing his studies in both art and astrophysics, Grabelsky spent four years studying classical drawing and painting techniques in Florence, Italy. The result is a unique style that is highly realistic and evocative, drawing inspiration from 19th-century French Academic painters.
One of the key themes in Grabelsky's work is the persistence of animal imagery in mythology and communal cultural imaginaries. He often superimposes animal imagery onto his depictions of the contemporary world, creating a dream-like quality that invites viewers to form their own interpretations of the imagery presented. The animals in his paintings are not intended to be viewed as fantasy or allegory, but rather as a manifestation of the inner workings of the hidden subconscious.
For Grabelsky, science taught him how to observe the world, and art has allowed him to express his relationship to it. His paintings are not just a representation of reality, but a reflection of his own inner world, where the boundary between reality and the subconscious is blurred.
Grabelsky's work is not easy to categorize, and that is precisely what makes it so captivating. His paintings are not intended to be viewed as fantasy or as allegory, but rather as a blend of every-day experiences and the subconscious. They are enigmatic, and they create dream-like worlds that invite viewers to form their own interpretations of the imagery presented.
In an age where technology and social media have made it easier than ever to present a curated version of ourselves to the world, Grabelsky's paintings remind us that there is always more beneath the surface. His work is a reminder of the complexity and depth of human nature, and the power of art to reveal the hidden identities and motivations lurking beyond the composure of the human mask.
