CATRIN
WELZS-TEIN
Surreal worlds created by mixed media
Catrin Welz-Stein is a German graphic designer who has made a name for herself in the art world with her surreal and fantastical mixed media creations. Her work is heavily influenced by the Surrealist movement, fairy tales, and folklore, and she has become known for her ability to breathe new life into vintage photos by experimenting in Photoshop.
Welz-Stein's process begins with a search for license-free images, illustrations, or photos for which copyright has long expired. She scours old books, magazines, and the internet for the perfect image, and once she has found it, she breaks it into pieces and begins to weave it back together with other images. Through this process, she transforms, assembles, and retouches the pieces until the original image is no longer recognizable, and an entirely new image is created.
One of Welz-Stein's most striking creations is her series of "Fairytale Portraits," in which she takes vintage photographs of people and transforms them into ethereal and otherworldly creatures. In these pieces, she often incorporates elements from nature, such as flowers and butterflies, to create a sense of fantasy and magic.
Another series that showcases her skills is "Surreal Landscapes" where Welz-Stein takes vintage images of landscapes and manipulates them to create dreamlike and surreal scenes. She often uses a combination of different images to create these landscapes, adding elements of fantasy and surrealism to create an otherworldly atmosphere.
Welz-Stein's work has been featured in galleries and exhibitions around the world, and she has gained a large following of art lovers who are captivated by her unique and imaginative style. Her artworks are not only beautiful, but they also tell a story and evoke emotions in the viewer.
